Schedule of All Contests
As you sit in Sherman Park you begin to wonder if they
have moved the poultry barn a little closer. First you
hear the cackling of hens and then the rooster chimes
in. No, you are not imagining things; it is time for our
popular rooster crowing and hen cackling competition.
Children, and a few brave adults, show off their
imitative skills with their best poultry renditions.
Union Fair is proud
to sponsor contests for children that require no
specific skills other than the ability and
desire to have fun. We have blueberry spitting
for distance, blueberry bubblegum
size, and blueberry pie eating for speed. You
may sense a theme; after all we are also the
Maine Wild Blueberry Festival as well. In case
blueberries are not your thing we also have pig
catching, baking, tractor peddling and the
increasing popular scavenger hunt for the young
and a more challenging version for the not so
Our contests are
simple back to basics family fun and while our
prizes for competing may not be big, the smiles
of participants, and their audience, are huge.
Check out our schedule for the full listing of
competitions. Whether you are a contestant or
observer, we dare you not to have fun!
Each year, at the Union Fair, youth have the opportunity
to go home with their very own bicycle and helmet.
Thanks to the generosity of
businesses, organizations and fair vendors
donations are made to purchase new bicycles for
the give-a-ways. Three categories, by age, have
the chance to enter a drawing to win one of the
bikes and a helmet. Three drawings are made on
three separate days with bikes for girls and
boys in each age group. Donations come from
throughout our regional area of Lincoln, Knox
and Waldo counties.
Drawing days, times and locations for sign-ups and
drawings are announced on the Fairground and usually
occur after the popular pig scrambles.
Who doesn't like a
little adventure and some sleuthing fun? For
those who are looking for a fun way to take a
tour through the barns and exhibits, Union Fair
has Scavenger Hunts that will lead "adventurers"
on a trip around the grounds. Younger hunters
receive a Passport full of clues to find
stickers hidden around the grounds. A little
prize awaits at the end of the trail, with a
chance to win the Grand Prize. For full-fledged
seekers, a more extensive and "puzzling" hunt
exists. Follow clues, solve puzzles, and see
what others don't see to find the Code to open
the Blueberry Cryptex. This hunt can be solved
in an afternoon, or could be spread over several
days. You are guaranteed to see things you've
never noticed at the Fair before. Be on the
lookout for new additions to the Quests!
Farm Style Games
You don't have to be
brought up in a barn to chase a pig, get hay
chaff down your neck, or break some eggs… Just
join in with the
Barnyard Games for some old
fashioned fun! Various Farm themed contests are
held for those daring enough to try. One of the
highlights of the week is the Pig Scramble for
kids. Everyone squeals with delight at this
event. See the
contest schedule for times and locations.
