Matthews Museum of Maine Heritage
Come in and experience what Maine life was like over the past 300 years. Often referred to as “Maine’s best kept secret”, Matthews Museum welcomes you with numerousexhibits from Maine’s history.
A highlight of the museum is the 32 foot tall Moxie Bottle Stand. Built in 1906, it was used as a traveling exhibit advertising Moxie, once America’s largest selling soda. The Bottle Stand is the only remaining of its kind in America. Also on display are hundreds of Moxie memorabilia items produced since 1884 to advertise America’s oldest and Maine’s Official Soft Drink.
Beginning in 1965, Matthews Museum displayed the personal collection of local resident and collector, Edwards A. Matthews, purchased by the Union Fair Committee. Currently the museum holds more than 10,000 items on display.
Another highlight is the Collins, Wingate and Little one-horse shay manufactured in Union. One of only two known to survive, it was recently restored joining a vintage mail wagon and hearse.
Hodge School, operating from 1864 to 1954 in Washington, Maine, it is a complete one-room school house bringing back memories to seniors and showing youth what schools were like in the “good old days”. Special presentations are available in the school during fair week.
Other exhibits include a coopers (barrel makers) shop, extensive tool displays, items from the home and office of former Governor Frederick Payne of Waldoboro, a typical pantry and kitchen from the 19th Century and numerous displays of toys, dolls, farm equipment and household furnishings.
Experience the music of Reverend Ufford, listen to the Edison record player, shell corn, the old fashioned way and enjoy ice cold Moxie samples on Wednesday. Other interactive displays will also be available through out the week.
Supported by memberships and donations, the Museum is also open regularly Wednesday through Saturday, noon to 4 PM during July and August. A totally volunteers operation, the Museum is supported by sales of Moxie memorabilia and reproduction toys and various reference books.
